Synchronous Payload Envelope. The SONET frame is divided into two parts: the transport overhead (first 9 columns of the frame) and SPE. The SPE can also be divided into two parts: STS POH (first column of the payload field) and the payload itself. The payload is the user data being transported and routed over the SONET network.
