TTL

Time to Live. TTL is the IP header field that specifies the time a datagram is allowed to remain in an Internet. Each IP datagram is assigned an integer TTL when it is created. When an IP router receives a packet, it decrements the TTL field. A router discards a packet if its TTL value reaches zero.
