A switch is a device that operates at the Data Link Layer of the OSI reference model. A switch can connect LANs or segments of the same media access type. A switch dedicates its entire bandwidth to each frame it switches. Switches are also found in Wide Area Networks (WANs), as devices such as Frame Relay switches and ATM switches are used to move information from one network to another.
