Server Message Block (SMB)

SMB is the IBM PC LAN protocol used to communicate with devices located on a LAN. It uses NetBIOS at the Session Layer to communicate across a LAN. Functions requiring LAN support, such as retrieving files from a file server, are translated into SMB commands before they are sent to a remote device.
