Local Management Interface. Network and access devices may pass special management frames with unique DLCI addresses, called “Local Management Interface (LMI) frames.” These frames provide a signaling standard between a CPE router and the frame switch, monitor a link’s status, and reflect whether the link is active or inactive. LMI frames also pass information regarding the current status of permanent virtual circuits. Frame relay’s original specification did not provide for this kind of status. Since then, American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Consultative Committee for International Telegraphy and Telephony (CCITT) specifications developed and incorporated a method for LMI, now known “officially” as Data Link Control Management Interface (DLCMI).
