A harmonic frequency is a multiple of a lower frequency. For example, 4,000 and 6,000 Hz are both harmonics of 2,000 Hz. Harmonic distortion describes the tendency to amplify and transmit harmonics of an input signal. Amplifier feedback, the shrieking sound caused by a microphone too close to a loudspeaker, is a type of harmonic distortion.
