type of service (ToS) bits

ToS bits are the set of eight bits in an Internet Protocol (IP) packet header used to designate the type of service a packet is provided across a network. QoS services used for delay-sensitive, bandwidth-intensive services, such as video and Voice over IP (VoIP) modify these bits to suit their needs. Network devices all along the packet's route must recognize these bit settings, and provide the appropriate network services.
